Root Canal Treatment

Save your natural tooth with modern root canal therapy

In the past, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you'd probably lose that tooth. Today, with a special dental procedure called root canal treatment, you may save that tooth.

What Is a Root Canal?

Inside each tooth is both the pulp and the nerve. The nerve is the vestige of the tissue that originally formed the tooth. Once the tooth has been in the mouth for a time, the functioning of the nerve is no longer necessary. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, cracks, or trauma, root canal treatment is needed to save the tooth.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

  • Severe toothache or pain when chewing
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums
  • A persistent pimple on the gums

The Root Canal Procedure

During root canal treatment, Dr. Thietten removes the infected pulp tissue, carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the tooth, and fills and seals the space. Afterward, a crown is usually placed on the tooth to protect it and restore it to full function. Modern root canal treatment is often completed in one or two visits and is much more comfortable than many people expect.
