Wisdom Teeth

Evaluation and removal of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth

The removal of wisdom teeth has become so commonplace that it is almost a rite of passage for young adults. Wisdom teeth are a type of molar that is found in the very back of your mouth. There are four wisdom teeth: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right.

Why Wisdom Teeth May Need Removal

When a tooth is impacted, it may need to be removed. If it is not removed, you may develop gum tenderness, swelling, or even severe pain. Impacted wisdom teeth that are partially or fully erupted tend to be quite difficult to clean and are susceptible to tooth decay, recurring infections, and gum disease.

Signs of Wisdom Tooth Problems

  • Pain or swelling in the back of the mouth
  • Difficulty opening the jaw
  • Red or swollen gums near the wisdom teeth
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste
  • Crowding or shifting of other teeth

The Evaluation Process

Dr. Thietten will examine your wisdom teeth and take X-rays to determine their position and whether removal is recommended. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed — if they are healthy, fully erupted, positioned correctly, and can be cleaned properly, they may be left in place.

After Removal

Following wisdom tooth extraction, Dr. Thietten will provide detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and minimize discomfort. Most patients recover within a few days and can return to their normal routine shortly after the procedure.
